*slams mimosa* ok kids I had a revelation the other day and I hate myself for having it but here we go
it’s about the Star Wars, specifically the Mortis Arc so buckle up for fuckery.
For really in depth analysis of this arc of the Clone Wars, go give a listen to @WhoTaIksFirst and @metamashina they do such a good job of explaining why the arc is important in-universe. They are majestic podcasting unicorns, listen/rate/review/give them monies.
In summary, there is a Father, a Son and a Daughter, all incarnations of the Force. Dark, Light, and the supposed balance between them. BUT.
And that’s a big BUT. Because it’s not balanced. Let’s go take a look at some hot and heavy carpentry terminology (Harrison would be proud)
In carpentry (and smithing and masonry) mortise and tenon joint are used two pieces of material to create a solid base. Houses, cabinets, etc all use some version of this. It’s been used for THOUSANDS of years.
Here’s the thing: you can’t just have 2 sides of a mortise-tenon joint. Shit won’t stand up. You need four sides to make a square (or a diamond, heyo Black Diamond working title for IX) so that it doesn’t fall apart. They push against each other while holding the piece together
Mortise-tenon joints are also known as tongue and groove joints *cough* with the mortise hole being filled with the tenon tongue jesus Christ *chugs more mimosa*
Reylo fanfic filth authors, you are redeemed and justified in your writing. I hope you feel seen.
ANywAYs the Father/Son/Daughter balance in the Mortis Arc is doomed to fail because it’s inherently unstable. It lacks another piece to complete it, which is what a lot of TrAgiC stories are missing: The Mother. Because older women are scary to insecure people, yah? Yah.
So how does this tie into the ST? Well, my good bitches, it’s that missing piece: the Mother figure. Shmi, Padme, even Leia. They are absent mothers. They’re the last piece in this square/diamond to make things stable.
We know we’ve seen the balance in the galaxy come thisclose to happening, but it was always inherently unstable and missing the essential Mother piece.
Because we have the Force balancing components in Rey and Ben, but there is still the conflict in the mundane bits of the galaxy, specifically the Resistance and the First Order.
You can’t have peace in the galaxy without balance in the Force, but the balance in the Force is unsustainable unless the galaxy is at peace. Our two sweet space idiots are on opposite sides of the conflict.
One could argue that the Force already tried to unite the mundane with the Force in Padme and Anakin, until he went completely off the rails. The Force and the galaxy could have been balanced with a healthy bit of love between these two...
...but thanks to Palps being shitty and the Jedi being fuck-awful…well, we know how that turned out.
So, in TLJ, we see our favorite space idiots grow from children to quasi-adolescents who have to push away from childish things into their own awkward nascent adulthood. So many other smarter people than me have called this out, but they’re going to fail in their first forays.
Everyone does. They’ll try to go back to what they know because it’s safe, but safety inhibits growth/healing. To truly grow, they’re going to have to confront the things that scare them...
namely adulthood and all its responsibilities, to themselves, the structures they exist within and the people they care about.
Mother, Father, Son, Daughter :: Resistance, First Order, Light, Dark.
Mortis itself appears as a rhombohedron: a four-sided cube. It calls to mind the multiple dimensions of being. As above, so below, etc. The connection between the light and the dark as well as the mundane reality of the rest of the galaxy.
Peace in the galaxy hinges on balance in the Force and vice versa. Each of these pieces having the other to balance it creates a stable base for the galaxy to rest on. Because just like cabinetry, peace in the galaxy is a…wait for it…
JOINT EFFORT.
Yeah, the metaphor of peace and balance is a carpentry-based dad-joke and yes I hate myself but hey I didn’t create it I just have an English degree and no way to use it other than unleashing it on pop culture so we are. I am right, you will not change my mind send tweet
