One of many functions of demonizing “the media” is to create a euphemistic way of describing “lying to the American public.”
“Well, it’s not crime to lie to the New York Times, ha ha, screw those guys!” Yeah, dude, but the point of lying to the New York Times is that they repeat that lie to you.
Maybe other folks can track down examples, but I feel like I heard a LOT of characterizations of the “meeting about adoptions” lie that accept the framing of it as a lie “to the press.” Which is like saying “technically I only lied to my telephone...”
