If you want to learn what goes on at your child's school, host lots of gatherings, feed the whole crew and listen non-judgmentally.

There's a lot of problem stuff happening. But this group of kids, they're good and trying to make things better.
They ROASTED today's "hip and relatable" assembly about drug abuse.

"Take an hour of sob stories and a middle-aged guy saying 'drugs are bad', add random snippets of popular music and laser lights. Apparently they think this is how to speak teenager."
I shared stories of similar assemblies from the 1990's. And that we laughed at the sad grownups too.

They are always so surprised to hear that some experiences transcend generations.
And I learned that "trending" is now an adjective that applies to kids who are rising in popularity at school.

I will almost definitely use this in conversation and get labeled as a sad grownup trying to be #relatable

(Saying "hashtag relatable" is also frowned upon)
Other forbidden phrases include:

- AF
- Squad goals
- Absolute unit
- Commenting on anything's thiccness
I think some of the horror stems from the realization that I understand their inside jokes...🤣

It's OK, kids. I was 12 once. And honestly, sometimes I still am.
I remember when every sentence was a sex joke and feeling all the feelings was overwheming and nobody understood and everything kept changing and our bodies did weird things and I wanted to be completely independent and yet also protected from all the daily bullshit.
When I wanted to be myself but also somebody infinitely cooler and life either moved way too fast or proceeded at a glacial pace. Middle school is HARD.
