It is just so frustrating to see how little they understand about how US-enforced policies are precisely what are driving people out
Sickening that the very country that spends billions to destabilize a region refuses to invest in building the infrastructure for stability
People do not WANT to leave their homes. They love their culture, food, daily rhythms of life. Migration to the US means giving up who they are to become disrespected, discriminated laborers in a foreign land
People only leave when survival is untenable, when free trade and securitization (promoted by and benefiting the US and global corporations) push them out of their homes

When I was in 7th grade, on our way to her house, my dear Mexican friend asked me not to tell her mother that I am Salvadoran. “If she finds out, she won’t let me be your friend anymore.”
In college, my close Mexican friend got drunk one day and asked me, “why do we all hate Salvadorans?”
Growing up Salvadoran in Los Angeles was punctured with moments like these against me and my family, and without ever seeing any positive representations of our culture on television, or radio, in English, or Spanish, I didn’t have ways to make sense of them.

On the one hand, I'm grateful that people are finally outraged about violence against migrants/refugees/asylum-seekers/human beings. Thank goodness for human decency and solidarity.
On the other hand, so many of the current narratives feel incomplete and, in a broader context of US-Mexico-Central American realities, it is painful to see this all playing out without recognition of a much longer history of violence against Central American peoples.
Just to give you a sense, the current conversation about doing away with the Flores Settlement often misses the point that the settlement was based on the case of a Salvadoran minor who had to sue to achieve basic human rights in detention.

I held out as long as I could, but then listened to that recording of the children. They call out for their papá, respond to questions about where they're from. El Salvador. Guatemala. And they keep crying out for their fathers. #CentAmStudies
I have written about families torn apart in other ways, mostly as a result of US foreign policy (military and economic intervention). Being unable to reside together for many years is soul-crushing for many who live that experience
In the cases I wrote about, though, in transnational families when parents had some very limited agency to make the decision to leave, the children at least usually stayed with a loved one.

The flow of refugees to the United States is good income for the Trump administration and friends, stopping the flow is not a real priority and it is detrimental to the earnings of private internment camp corporations, real-estate firms involved with "the wall", and Republicans.
To add further injury by the overwhelming profit the refugee crisis in Central America is creating for certain individuals and corporations in the United States, they are also being weaponized against Mexico and its new Leftist government, who have to foot the bill of the crisis.

1. Obama held people in detention camps to deter asylum seekers and reduce illegal border crossings. Trump is tear gassing people for the same reason. There’s an easy solution to this: Massively increase the budget to expedite processing of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.
2. It costs $5-$10 billion per decade to process and resettle asylum seekers and refugees in the US. Increase that to $25 billion per year (take it from the “defense” budget) and see how quickly the ideological differences over immigration reform disappear. Skeptical?
3. When the immigration/resettlement budget is increased, people’s motivations will change. They will go from opposing immigration to supporting it: Note how many Democrats in Congress vote year after year to increase military spending, which trickles down to their districts.

New Joe Biden op-ed on illegal immigration from Northern Triancle countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras) and how to curb it got little media analysis, but worth a read, especially as Mike Pence just met Northern Triangle presidents to get them to work harder on problems.
2. In 2014, Biden visited Northern Triangle countries and urged them to fight corruption, clean up their police, increase tax collection and improve opportunities for would-be migrants, while making it clear that undocumented migration offered scant hope of legal status in US.
3. Following Biden’s visit, Congress pledged $750 million to Northern Triangle countries - aid tied to these counties delivering on commitments to reduce flow of undocumented migrants, which Biden notes resulted in some improvements, such as 33% drop in murder rate in Honduras.

2. DATELINE - May 2011 – President Obama travels to the Rio Grande sector of the border to push for his immigration platform (ie. Amnesty). He proclaims the border is safe and secure and famously attacks his opposition for wanting an “alligator moat”.
3. November 2012 – Election year campaign(s). Using wedge issues like “War on Women”, and “Immigration / Amnesty”, candidate Obama promises to push congress for “amnesty”, under the guise of “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”, if elected.

President Obama wins reelection.

Today I prepared a beautiful 6-year-old girl in a pink hat for an #asylum interview.

ME: Do you want to go back to El Salvador?

CLIENT [eyes wide]: No!

ME: Why not?

CLIENT [looking down at table]: Because of the bad people.

She'll be deported before her 10th birthday.
That tweet above is pretty much verbatim what she'll be saying on Monday; her father will provide the rest. He'll tell the interviewer about the threats of kidnapping & murder, and what gangs do to children of people they extort if they can't escape. She will not receive asylum.
The case will be referred back to an immigration judge, who will find that she & her family have not suffered persecution based on any grounds that the law can recognize. By the time of her hearing, AG Sessions will have personally removed any doubt of the law around this point.
