The day before Brexit, we’ll be bound by EU rules, subject to EU enforcement mechanisms. The day after Brexit we won’t. So the EU will enforce its rules at the border.
“But our rules are the same”. If we really want identical rules with the EU -well, then let’s bind ourselves to that. But we are arguing on Monday “finally we are free and can change the rules” and on Tuesday “but we have the same rules”.Brexit was about freedom of changing rules
Which brings us to the irrational bit. That’s why there was such a believe on the Continent that Brexit wouldn’t happen. Because some thought it was irrational that the UK would tear up a common rule book and thus be subject to controls...
... all choices come with up and downside. We wanted regulatory freedom. Downside checks. Let’s accept the consequence of our choice.
