A question came up: what would Lee Kuan Yew have made of Trump? Understanding of America’s strengths — openness, inventiveness, adaptability — was something Lee was known for; insight into how those strengths were reflected in American leaders was another. @CollinSLKoh
How much would Trump have altered Lee’s judgement of America’s future in the world? Would he view the Trump period as an aberration, a time of acceleration of pre-existing trends, or something else? And how would he advise governments in the Pacific region to adapt?
There’s no question Trump represents a change in American reliability. How great and how permanent a change is this perceived to be, by allied governments and potential adversaries? We’ll be grappling with this question for some years to come.

A note on these Mueller report highlights, via @oliviacpaschal & @maddiecarlisle2. Scroll down to item 8. It quotes Mueller’s report as to why he failed to secure Trump’s own testimony, either in person or (wrt obstruction) at all. Thread.
2. One concern Trump, his media lawyer Rudolph Giuliani & other associates mentioned often in public statements was their (that is, Trump’s) fear of a “perjury trap.” The idea was that lying to investigators could be used against a President guilty of nothing else.
3. Trump, of course, lies about everything. Fear of getting caught lying to investigators was not irrational on his part. It’s not a great argument for an investigator not to subpoena his testimony, something Mueller shrank from doing. Why?

From last night, a point about the Assange matter from @dwnews reporter @melissakchan. There does seem to be a significant gap between zealous defenders of the abstract on the one hand & Assange’s many critics on the other.
Of course, it’s also true Assange was involved in several different things: the leak of confidential (not Russian) diplomatic correspondence, theft of NSA (not Russian) hacking secrets, and hacking of US Democratic (not Russian) political figures & organizations.
About the first of these, @melissakchan’s comment above is apt. But note this thread also from @maxbergmann — much of what got leaked via Wikileaks from US diplomats was rather flattering to them, if awkward for them.

Occasionally I see undergrads (and others) re-run the "development before democracy" argument – rule of law, well-functioning states, economic development should all take place before elections, as democracy might undermine all 3.

The idea, in a nutshell, is that only authoritarian rulers wielding much despotic power can break the logjam of entrenched conservative views (if social dev.) or entrenched private interests (if economic dev).

It's a seductive argument, hence me trying to think thru a response.
Promote democracy/elections as anything other than “a capstone to other social and economic achievements” (Robert Kaplan - 1997) and you’ll hand the country over to theocracy, kleptocracy, anarchy or economic stagnation.
