From last night, a point about the Assange matter from @dwnews reporter @melissakchan. There does seem to be a significant gap between zealous defenders of the abstract on the one hand & Assange’s many critics on the other.
Of course, it’s also true Assange was involved in several different things: the leak of confidential (not Russian) diplomatic correspondence, theft of NSA (not Russian) hacking secrets, and hacking of US Democratic (not Russian) political figures & organizations.
About the first of these, @melissakchan’s comment above is apt. But note this thread also from @maxbergmann — much of what got leaked via Wikileaks from US diplomats was rather flattering to them, if awkward for them.

A question came up: what would Lee Kuan Yew have made of Trump? Understanding of America’s strengths — openness, inventiveness, adaptability — was something Lee was known for; insight into how those strengths were reflected in American leaders was another. @CollinSLKoh
How much would Trump have altered Lee’s judgement of America’s future in the world? Would he view the Trump period as an aberration, a time of acceleration of pre-existing trends, or something else? And how would he advise governments in the Pacific region to adapt?

Here’s a good essay from @steve_vladeck on ways for Congress to change the law to make it harder for a President like Trump to bypass the Senate confirmation process. So why is changing the law necessary? Well...
2. We’d need to change the law if the Senate majority were unwilling to impose any costs on Trump for leaving large Departments headed by acting, unconfirmed appointees. But a majority unwilling to do this would not be willing to change the law. What could Senators do now?
3. They could start with public statements. A letter from @senatemajldr to the President demanding nomination of new @DeptofDefense & @DHSgov Secretaries could go a long way. Since this President does not read, perhaps a TV talk show appearance might be more effective.

Lesson 1) The econ legacy of global capitalism in the west since the mid-2000s has been an unprecedented level of middle class stagnation.

Every political phenomenon from far-left to far-right populism—plutophobia, xenophobia, anti-EU sentiment—is multiplied by this fact.
Lesson 2) After stagnation, the second universal multiplier in west's nervous breakdown has been social media.

It's hard to overstate just how central social media has been to the success of far-right nationalist movements around the world.
