A thing about Portland is that while its gentrification trend is moderate compared to other cities, it targeted the city's black neighborhoods with surgical precision. Over 40% of black residents lived in an area that gentrified since 2000, and now only 20% live in those areas!
That's remarkable in at least two ways: first, in most other places where there's high black exposure to gentrification (e.g., Long Beach, DC) there's also high OVERALL exposure - the city is just gentrifying a lot. Not so in Portland! Black exposure is MUCH higher than overall.
Second, while the black population of gentrifying areas falls slightly in most cities (potential evidence of both displacement and of the parallel trend of black suburbanization), there's just nowhere else where the black population just straight gets cut in half like that.
Some of this probably reflects the relatively low number of black residents in Portland to begin with - it takes a lot less to achieve large-scale displacement. Still, though! These are crazy numbers you don't see anywhere else.
