@realDonaldTrump hopes that by abusing power in public and brazenly acting in ways that are inappropriate, Americans lose their ability to see what is normal and what is wrong. Then it becomes more difficult politically to do anything about the situation. /1
This is a twisted form of transparency, an ideal from the 1960s intended to make government more accountable. Trump’s version of transparency is to allow the public to see misconduct first hand so that it all starts to feel familiar. /2
For good reason, the Mueller report won’t quell the concerns of those who still care. The report makes clear that there were numerous points of contact between Trump campaign officials and individuals with ties to the Russian government./3
The report also makes clear that @realDonaldTrump went to great lengths in private to stifle Mueller’s investigation. Sometimes, the only thing that stopped the president were advisors who wouldn’t go through with his wishes./4
In the court of public opinion, his strategy has not worked. A majority of the country has not supported the president nor have they trusted him. But politically his approach has made it difficult for legislators to build support for doing anything about these actions. /5
