The notion that elections depend on who can convince the most people to vote for them versus the other candidate is false and dangerous. Elections depend on who can convince people to vote. Period.
Swing voters might be a real thing if we had mandatory voting, automatic registration or at least a national holiday for Election Day. But until then, you win elections by convincing ALL of your potential supporters to actually vote.
You do that by appealing to your base who can energize the rest of your potential votes. You don’t do this by appealing to the “middle” and trying to convince your opposition to switch sides. You can also do this by convincing your opponents base to stay home.
This is how Trump is able to win. It’s not that he has a tremendous amount of support. It’s that if you support Trump, you sure as hell aren’t going to stay home on Election Day.
I am so sick of hearing liberals say that we need someone who can appeal to Republican voters. No! We need someone that excites our base so we actually ALL show up.
