Short thread on importance of even the smallest elections:
BEGIN
1) My small coastal town has 3 seats up for city council next month. #vote
2) Of those running for city council, 5 believe in climate change, 4 don't. All but 2 candidates GOP. 3/5 climate believers here GOP. #vote
3) Last city council election, only 20% registered Dems voted, because they saw majority of candidates were GOP and they dismissed them.
4) As a result, the open seats went to climate deniers. Had Dems voted & for the moderate GOPs 7 of 9 seats would believe in #climatechange.
5) Instead the 6 climate deniers on city council vetoed regulations to protect our dunes so we could sell more "oceanview" hotel rooms #vote
6) This year, #Irma came. We had no dunes bc city council allowed hotels to bulldoze them. Entire town was under water, "unprecedented."
7) Our beach has eroded due to sea level rise. Houses that never flooded, flooded with Irma. But city council denies #climatechange.
8) Floodplain managers say even 10 ft dunes would have saved most of our town from #hurricane. But city council chose profit over #science.
9) Had Dems bothered to research views instead of just not voting bc all candidates GOP, we would have had pro-science GOP city council.
10) If Dems had voted, we would have had dunes& we would have saved millions in Irma flood damage. THAT'S how important local elections are.
11) Moral: Don't dismiss your small town/local elections, even if you live in GOPland. Research. #Vote. Change starts from the bottom. FIN.
This doesn't even touch that fact that Dems didn't run. You can't win elections if you don't run candidates. Repubs have cleaned up locally.
