I've never lived in a place with such glaring, visible, disgusting inequality as San Francisco. The only place I've even seen that could compare was Bangkok, where a shanty-town clustered around the gleaming office towers of the national oil company.

When was this golden age when an inherited elite created a more equal society out of noblesse oblige?

The Gilded Age?

The Victorian Era?
Or should we go back further? The Baroque Period? The Middle Ages?

When was the golden age of noblesse oblige-driven egalitarianism?
The idea that an inherited elite felt more noblesse oblige comes up a lot on alt-right blogs, who typically argue that Jews replacing WASPs in elite positions was what screwed over the white working class.

Much anti-immigration sentiment is motivated by racism. But we should not neglect the impact of partisan politics. Republicans fear that immigration = importing votes for the Democrats.

Note that this was a big reason for anti-immigrant sentiment in the 1800s. Federalists and Whigs feared that immigration = importing votes for the Democrats.

But immigration restrictionists never succeeded in the early 1800s.

Why?

Because immigrants got naturalized, registered to vote, and voted...for the Democrats.

Never fails. Checking FB posts re: dogs on e-list, and see so many negative comments about @MCanimalcare. Ex. “Pls save this dog from that heartless place.”I have to wonder if the posters have ever been there.If so,they somehow missed the dogs that have been there for months.1/12

They somehow missed the notes on the kennels that tell you about medical care that the animal has received while at the shelter, or how the dog does on walks, and other behaviors observed while staff and volunteers are interacting with these homeless dogs. 3/12

Two US military photos of #Khadr at the scene of the firefight:
LEFT: as found, totally buried under large rocks/rubble of collapsed roof;
RIGHT: in same position with debris cleared

I have questions 1/
1. Was Khadr shot before or after the photo on the left?

Comparing the photos, there is a very slim outline of his left shoulder that looks identical to the image on the right.

iow, he appears not to have been moved at all, but merely had debris cleared. 2/
2. If he was shot before the first photo on left was taken, where are the entry marks to indicate that?

Looking again at the upper left shoulder, and the gunshot wound immediately below in the 2nd image, it appears clear that this happened between the 1st and 2nd photos. 3/

Similar to ed tech people, the people who work in assessment seem to feel besieged by faculty themselves who they believe are hostile to the work. Both articles claim faculty strawman assessment in an effort to discredit the entire scope of the work.
Of course this claim about faculty strawmannirg assessment is itself a strawman, but I think it points to the disconnects between assessment offices/professionals and instructional faculty. The assessment folks are dedicated, well-meaning, and they feel disrespected.
