Never fails. Checking FB posts re: dogs on e-list, and see so many negative comments about @MCanimalcare. Ex. “Pls save this dog from that heartless place.”I have to wonder if the posters have ever been there. If so,they somehow missed the dogs that have been there for months.1/12
...waiting to connect with a family. They somehow missed staff and volunteers filling the food bowls, cleaning the kennels, and walking these dogs, all to keep them mentally and physically healthy, while waiting for that special person that will pick them up and give them a home.2/12
They somehow missed the notes on the kennels that tell you about medical care that the animal has received while at the shelter, or how the dog does on walks, and other behaviors observed while staff and volunteers are interacting with these homeless dogs. 3/12
They definitely did not see the extras that the staff and volunteers do for our displaced pets-like the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with homemade entrees and desserts. Not visible during a trip to the shelter is the laundry crew-nonstop washing blankets...4/12
...so our homeless pets have a clean bed. They probably haven’t looked at the @MCanimalcare website where you will find a photo of each dog, including the date that they were brought to the shelter. Photos? Yes. Of every dog and cat. Taken by staff and volunteers. 5/12
The intake date on the photos will tell them how many weeks, and months an animal has spent at the shelter. They will see dogs like Lacy and Paco, that have been there since Christmas Eve 2016. 6/12
Check out @gregdunaway ‘s Twitter acct and they will see videos of young dogs that have spent most of their lives at the shelter. 7/12
There are currently 511 dogs posted on the @MCanimalcare website. Most of them have been there for well over 30 days-debunking the oft repeated rumor that dogs are put down after 30 days. If they looked at this, they might see that it is not a “heartless place”... 8/12
...but a place of hope-a place that cares and provides for these animals while they wait for that special person or family to come and take them to the home of their dreams. Think of it as “transitional housing”-safety from traffic, weather, mean people while waiting. 9/12
The sad, unfortunate part of this is that, yes, some dogs are euthanized. Some have been there so long that their mental and physical health deteriorates to the point that their name appears on the list that we all hate-the e-list. Sometimes our community comes through... 10/12
...a volunteer, a foster, an adopter, because someone has cared enough to advocate for that dog. If you think the shelter is a “heartless place”, I encourage, even challenge, you to head down there with new eyes. Our displaced pets need you to be part of the solution. 11/12
There are many ways to help: donate, volunteer, foster, share info, check out @AARM_org to help their new initiative to chip, neuter/spay...and, of course, adopt. 12/12
