Still thinking about this strange Martin Wolf piece. Every country there was governed by a more problematic leader in terms of the rule of law in Wolf’s lifetime than the current figures (problematic as they are).

So what is the radical change Wolf is talking about? That they are unrefined, uncultured, unserious. The aesthetic judgment, the social prejudice deserve attention. (Putin a bit of an exception here and often he is actually not included in the biker group)
But even Putin can be vulgar. Notice, more pertinently, how Xi does not appear in cartoon. “Because Xi is sophisticated,” Wolf would say (he does not include him in list of strongmen and neither does cartoonist). So this is not about democracy and dictatorship after all, is it?
So how do we transform Wolf’s moment of indiscretion into a definition of populism - the right definition of populism, which no one has developed yet?
