I slept it on this but I’m still bothered today so I’m going to speak on it. Recently I’ve read several articles / posts / tweets about western songwriters’ contributions to the latest BTS album & a lot of it amounts to erasure/dismissal of POCs’ work.
BTS composes,creates, produces, writes lyrics for all their songs. Like Drake/Kendrick/Beyonce/Adele, there are others who contribute, but BTS’ album is their own creation. Some of these interviews/tweets reduce BTS to translators or only excuting someone else’s vision 
1) No direct trans is possible based on the sentence structure/composition of Hangul. E.g., Boy With Luv is used in the West, but the Korean title is A Poem for Small Things bc the song is literally how the singer wants to know all small, petty, trivial things abt their loved one

E.g.2 Jamais Vu is not about a person being a remedy. It’s about a Jungian concept of reliving the same mistakes repeatedly (hence the title). BTS lyricist explained that he envisioned this as an individual in a game failing to progress&dying bc of repeating the same mistake.
BTS are musicians, first and foremost. They play instruments, create beats, compose melodies, harmonies, and rap arrangements. They write their own lyrics. They also sing, rap, and dance brilliantly. There are always questions abt why BTS is popular, but so few answer the music.
I’d ask that those in Western media to please stop erasing POCs work in an effort to uplift Western voices or to fit BTS into an easier narrative bc it may take time to understand their music. The fans make the effort, surely, journalists should, too.
