Folks on the left who were claiming to be libertarian anarcho-communists about five minutes now scrambling over themselves to uncritically defend the likes of Seumas Milne are really quite something.
The dude is a down-the-line Stalinist, who got his formation in “Straight Left” the worst, most reactionary (like... genuinely; on social issues as well as international politics) tendency of the post-CP ecosystem. He thinks Putin’s Russia is a bulwark against US imperialism.
On top of which, he is an extremely highly-paid, unelected, and entirely unaccountable official occupying the type of role that anyone with a modicum of grassroots democratic instinct should *at least* be demanding is elected, if not abolished.
“He was right about Iraq and Afghanistan” is not a permanent pass for having shit politics, especially if your opposition to those wars was motivated by my-enemy’s-enemy-is-my-friend “anti-imperialism” rather than internationalist solidarity.
The extent to which a supposed left-wing upsurge in Labour seems to have trained a whole layer of otherwise intelligent people into instincts of deference to bureaucrats, uncritical adulation of leaders, and selective suspension of independent thought is genuinely troubling.
