Muchos crímenes violentos son reacciones moralistas a conductas que el agresor considera desviadas moralmente: falta de respeto, deudas impagadas, falsas acusaciones, infidelidades, actos violentos previos u otro acto considerado malo moralmente.
La violencia moralista ocurre, por tanto, en el contexto de reparar un agravio, de buscar justicia o venganza. Black dice que la violencia moralista es control social o manejo de un conflicto.
Por contra, la violencia depredadora implica la explotación de una persona o de su propiedad. Ejemplos típicos son los robos, la violación o los asesinos en serie. Aquí no hay un conflicto previo sino que el agresor explota a la víctima.
