Cycle:

-$2.75 fare is difference btwn eating for many in NYC.
-Man arrested 2x for not paying.
-Sentenced to community service.
-Didnt show bc he couldnt afford to get there.
-Arrested for not doing community service.
-Resentenced to community service.
-Owes $240 court fees.
You can’t deter poverty w/ threat of jail. Sure community service is better than fines or jail, but to what end? What lesson is being taught? Why not redirect resources spent on policing, arrests, jail, prosecutions, staffing up community service offices to free or fairer fares?
If he doesn’t do community service this time, he’ll face up to 15 days jail on each case. Total of 30 days (20 w/ good time) on Rikers. If he doesn’t pay $240 court fees, a civil judgment will be entered, ensuring he has bad credit for 7 years.

Before shooting this 14 y/o child, the cop acknowledges its likely a “cap gun” over the radio. Then shoots 4 times. The little boy is then cuffed, face down, crying while the cop assures him “youre not going to die.” Another cop asks if the shooter is okay.
Didn’t identify himself as a police officer. Didn’t take the opportunity to determine whether it in fact was a BB gun. Didn’t assess whether just kids shooting at targets. Didn’t give child an opportunity to respond. He just snuck up, pointed his handgun through a fence, & fired.
Aftermath:

Officer still on force.
District Attorney determined shooting was *justified.*
Family cant afford medical bills.
Including a $1300 ambulance ride!
Child missed 3 weeks of 8th grade.

The only message sent by system: Dont be black, in a backyard, & play w/ a BB gun.

An NYPD judge just ruled for Eric Garners killer. Who FYI is still on force making a 6 figure salary. Says no discipline bc too much time has passed *unless it can be shown officer committed crime. Police union claiming victory. But heres the thing: He killed Garner. On video.
The judge did however rule that the trial against Daniel Pantaleo could proceed and would starting next week. The *most* he faces if found guilty is his firing. Which should have happened five years ago. apnews.com/c649c0b75a6644…

Last week: Man stood before judge. 3d time arrested for driving on suspended license. Held since yesterday. Hands cuffed behind back. Trouble affording DMV fines. Mom in audience. Says she can pay. He's ordered back to cells til she does. This is poverty. Should not be a crime.
Also last week: Another arrest for driving on suspended license. Spoke no English. Terrified. Never before arrested. Prosecution offered a traffic infraction w/ $100 fine. Asked if theyd consent to $75 minimum. Me: “$25 is a lot to him.” Them: “Come on. It’s a really good offer.”

Okay, so on a much more pleasant note, went to a Unitarian service on Sunday because Rabbi was speaking, and it was beautiful and fascinating and felt like the religion of the future. 1/x
And when I say the Unitarian service felt like the religion of the future, I mean if I were doing a scifi show and wanted to positively portray a major human religion 1000 years from now, this is probably what it would look like.
Like, on one hand, it's obviously pretty ideologically nonspecific (and I personally like a bit more specificity), but on the other hand, I expected it to feel blander. Instead, it was thoughtful and beautiful.

3/ ...to afford rent prices in this city. My partner and I had our first child 10 months ago. Going back to work—after taking (not enough) time off to care for our newborn—we discovered that on top of rent prices, quality childcare costs just as much.
