Two words you will not read in this hackneyed defense of drug costs:
INSULIN: the patent was sold for a dollar for the good of all mankind, drug companies charge bankrupting fees for it now.
EPI-PEN: price gone from $60 top $650 in ten years, same reason.

This is the great failing of libertarianism and a corollary, lesser failing of conservatism in America. Individuals are burdened with responsibility and moral choice, but form a company and be a factor in the economy and hey, profit margin's just things work. Absolution.
If I maximize my profit by murdering my neighbor, I'm a monster. You'd stop me. But kill thousands across America for that reason as a corporation, well what ELSE could you reasonably expect me to do?
The economy is not the WEATHER. It is not NATURE. It's constructed of human systems, systems brought into existence and then protected by human laws, and so subject to human moral intervention.
If some of these companies were animals stalking the night, claiming this many lives, we'd form posses to put them down.
In short, Charlie Stross has been right for a long time: we are living in the aftermath of an alien invasion. antipope.org/charlie/blog-s…
Or a slightly hipper reference: corporations as slow, dumb AI's patternsofmeaning.com/2017/11/30/ai-…
But both of those obscure the central point, and almost excuse mine: somewhere in the guts of that beast is a person, making a moral decision.

And they deserve to be held as accountable as the man on the street.
A fine is a price, no bad behavior stops until a rich white man goes to jail, yada yada, thanks for coming to my TED talk, book's on sale in the lobby, etc.
