I want to talk about the #GeorgiaAbortionBan. I was living in Georgia when I was pregnant with my first child. Easy pregnancy. I did everything I was supposed to do. The baby was late. Not a big deal. I was healthy. I was a first time mom. The OB pushed for inducement.
I didn't want to do that if there was no medical need. Finally we agreed that when I was two weeks past due, we'd induce. Again. No issues. No reason to think anything was wrong.
A few days before the scheduled induction, I woke up in labor and gushing blood. I was rushed to the hospital. There was no fetal heartbeat. I wanted this baby. I planned this baby. I needed this baby. And my baby was dead.
The OB stared me in the face and said, "What did you do?"
I spent the day in labor to deliver my stillborn daughter.
I will not go into the aftermath, the depression, the suicidal ideation, the crushing grief.
But now, consider if this happened today, and the doctor, hoping to avoid a lawsuit himself, turned the blame on me, a grieving mother who had done nothing wrong. Consider that I would likely have been investigated for murdering my baby because of the #GeorgiaAbortionBan.
This bill is nothing short of abuse. It strips away the autonomy of women. It says that we are nothing but vessels. It declares me null and void. It desecrates the memory of my dead daughter. My rage is boundless.
