We're heading into #MothersDay weekend and the festivities have already started today in countries like 🇲🇽,🇬🇹& 🇸🇻!

From all of us at @RAICESTEXAS we'd like to start wishing moms (on both sides of the border) a very special Mother's Day 💖
We know that every choice mom made for us from the moment we were born was to protect us. The same holds true for mothers coming to the United States with their children seeking refuge.

.@CBP is responsible for a fifth child’s death while in their custody at the Southern border.

This is the fifth child who’s lost their life in recent months.

FIVE DEAD CHILDREN IS FIVE TOO MANY.
@CBP We’re in El Paso right now where we have met countless families who were dropped at the local bus station.

The children we spoke too are in critical need of medical attention.

The sounds echoing through the bus station are babies with deep, hacking coughs.
One mom we met from Guatemala has a 5 day old baby. We met her sitting on the floor at the bus station.

She arrived here 20 days ago, spent time in a detention center and delivered a baby shortly after being released.

She’s in desperate need of postpartum care.

The boy is the second child to have died in CBP custody in the past week.

In December, @CBP boasted it had been a decade since a child died while in their custody, since then five children have died.

We demanded an investigation into CBP's mistreatment of migrant children NOW.
We’re in El Paso today & are horrified at the stories we’ve heard:

A Guatemalan mother & her 5 day old baby. Mom was sent out of hospital hours after giving birth. Needs after-birth care.

A Guatemalan father. His two year old child has eye infection. He hasn’t stopped crying.
A mother from Honduras. Her 6 month old baby with a deep throaty cough.

This is systematic.

"One father with a three-year-old child reported sleeping just one hour a night for three nights while held in the outdoor detention pen due to being forced to sleep on dirt and gravel without any protection against the heavy rains that hit the region over Mother’s Day weekend."
"Border Patrol agents would conduct checks every three hours and everyone was forced to stand and be counted. One family was held in a cell with 60 to 100 other migrants for 4 days and reported agents kicking anyone who fell asleep. "

Jayden Lowe died on 22/11/2018 after 11 months on the waitlist for the monopoly transgender children's gender service. 7 months on he would still be waiting. The wait is now 21 months & still rising. Some of our kids will never get there. #NHSfailingtranskids
Imagine if in September 2018, Jayden had reached the @NHSEngland service, they still would not have given any immediate medical treatment. They would not have offered bridging hormones, instead they would have reported him & his parents to social services for self medicating. 2/
@NHSEngland If not ejected from service, Jayden would have suffered more waiting during an assessment of minimum 3-6 to establish eligibility access hormone blockers. If already through puberty, blockers would create a medically induced menapause, extremely distressing as a 17 year old 3/

1 People are underestimating the importance of Trump’s Frontotemporal dementia in what we’ve seen over the last two weeks. Yes, it is that bad. If this sounds only 25% probable now, it will become 100% if he’s continues to cling to the legal protection of the White House.
2 The 11 doctors who examined Trump in February had to be horrified by his condition. Even more horrified by the inaction & obvious efforts of his enablers. On Monday, I noticed Pence staring at Trump’s left arm jerking, instead of his usual starry eyed gaze. The word is out.
3 Unique Issues dominate.
Problems:
1 Nat Security
2 Trump is an agent of Russia
3 He’s in mid stage dementia
4 He can pardon ppl
Solution:
1 Ease him out w/ leniency offer
2 Delay indictments till he's gone- crucial to prevent pardons & chaos while preserving Nat security

I have my issues🤷‍♀️! I always wanted to prove myself & make my family proud(2nd child). A pressure that was just in my head; they were always proud of us. I wanted to grow up to be a doctor or an army officer like my dad. Let's just say I changed my mind! #VoicesIWS @IWS_Network

To save our democracy, Profs. Levitzky & Ziblatt suggest “stepping back from the daily headlines” and “drawing lessons from the experiences of other democracies.” (Snyder says look at history)

1/ Prior to 1970, Chile was the oldest and most stable democracy in South America.

When left wing Allende was elected president in 1970, members of the far right launched a hate campaign against him, vowing to block his programs by any means necessary.
2/ Allende’s opponents called him a communist who wanted to turn Chile into another Cuba.

Stonewalled, Allende tried to push his agenda through by means beyond what the Constitution allowed.

Levitzky & Ziblatt emphasize that democracy is “grinding” work.
