As promised, some information on the organic chemistry teaching labs @NCStateChem.
Our labs are in the Marye Anne Fox building, which was completed in 2003. We have 6 labs, 3 instrument rooms, and one stockroom. Labs are in suites with an instrument room in between two labs. 1/n
All our labs look the same and are organized the same way. There are 3 whiteboards when you first come in, with storage behind them. Each lab has 5 two-sided workbenches 2/n
All the benches look the same. We don’t have assigned student drawers but common equipment. Frequently used items are at the bench, rarely used items are stored at the back of the lab and always accessible.
Since we work in micro scale, there is very little breakage. 3/n
Each lab has an ADA bench. These benches have half the drawers to provide space for a wheelchair or a service animal. We also have a lowered working surface that can be pulled out. 4/n
Instrument rooms have balances along one side, IR and GC along the other wall, ovens, melt-temps, and centrifuges in the middle 5/n
Things that I like:
-high shelf for lab computers, with flexible mounts
-storage cubbies and coat hooks
-benchtop hoods
-large drying racks
-large hoods at the back of the room for chemicals and waste
6/n
Our labs are smart labs. Each instrument has a QR code you can scan that will take you to a student-generated short video that will show you how to use it. Videos are also embedded in the lab e-books.7/n
You can check out all our student-generated lab videos on our YouTube channel (S.M.A.R.T.) 8/n

The video project (development and evaluation) was supported by a @NCStateDELTA large course redesign grant. @CathiDunnagan was our lead instructional designer and we had a great team: @arthurearnest @SLinePro @jdgordo1
