It was a thrill to talk to legendary journalist James Bamford about the despicable persecution of Maria Butina. Bamford knows more about Butina's case than anyone else in the media, and agrees that she is obviously a political prisoner patreon.com/posts/26827245
It was also satisfying to identify the journalists, such as @7im of Rolling Stone, who pushed a false narrative about Butina (Dickinson identified her as a “femme fatale”) and disgracefully fueled the hysteria that culminated with her currently sitting in prison
She wasn't a spy, she wasn't doing anything covert, she wasn't trading sex for access, she wasn't implicated in the Mueller investigation, she wasn't well-connected to the Kremlin. Virtually everything said about her was a lie. The media's coverage of this story was abominable
I can't recommend enough that everyone read Bamford's definitive article. As we discuss in the podcast, Bamford actually met Butina well before she was subject to any criminal investigation. That's how he first knew the govt/media portrayal was total BS newrepublic.com/article/153036…
