In NEW sentencing memo on Maria BUTINA, prosecutors seek 24 month sentence, saying tho not a traditional spy, her deception as an "access" agent, identifying vulnerable networks and individuals for Russia's spies to conduct influence operations, was integral to her crime.

Nielsen tried to convene cabinet meeting on election security for a govt-wide comprehensive strategy to combat Russian interference. She failed because aides said it questions his legitimacy. WELL DUH. Of course it does. That's his cross to bear for playing footsies with Putin.
Did Trump fire Nielsen over Russia? Wouldn't be the first. Her frustration w/ WH refusal to focus on continued Russian threats was evident. Bolton cut cybersecurity coordinator. In January, she fumed when 45% of DHS cyberdefense work force was furloughed during the govt shutdown.

I'm confused. Butina has served 9 months. CNN reported yesterday that DOJ wants 18 months (cnn.com/2019/04/19/pol…). Now we're hearing DOJ wants time served. What changed between yesterday and today? Is it that Barr intervened after reports Butina may still be a relevant witness?
1/ I admit it's highly unlikely Barr intervened for this reason. I'm just trying to figure out what happened between yesterday and today, and all I can find is this major story in Mother Jones saying that the Butina sentencing memo is incredibly revealing. motherjones.com/politics/2019/…
2/ I suppose the other possibility is that an 18-month sentence would still allow her to be paroled after 9 months? But that's not my understanding of the sentencing in this case; I think she'd be serving much more of an 18-month sentence than that. So all this is quite strange.

1. @maddow I looked at the Maria #Butina docket. No 71 that you addressed was followed by three other sealed documents. Usually motions are a single number with sub-parts so quite possibly these are substantive filings. Superseding indictment comes to mind. @Lawrence @Maddowbog Butina docket excerpt
2. I would look at Butina indictment and find a class of co-conspirators who might be charged. NRA possible. But we know she was really good at making friends in high places. 😎
3. I noticed that one of the missing documents was likely the December 17 minute order that this filing addressed. That was sealed but I guess after the errant disclosure in 71 they filed this in the clear.

Maria Butina, 29, a Russian citizen residing in DC, was arrested on July 15, 2018, in Washington, D.C., and made her initial appearance this afternoon before Magistrate Judge Deborah A. Robinson in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
She was ordered held pending a hearing set for July 18, 2018.
