It’s interesting that Christ never had sex.

That’s my only major problem with him.

But I get it.
I think many men out there will die alone. Competition is fierce. Winner-take-all effects kick in.

Christ’s celibacy was probably a way to endure what is an otherwise unfair burden for people (men and women) when they’re born into the world.

I suspect the way men and women mate, there’s even more unfairness when you intoduce technology. Because it acts as a lever for any small differences between and within sexes.

I suspect religion and marriage were ways to make it more fair and easier to bear as we modernized.

People underestimate the degree to which their desires are programmed by the culture around them.

It’s a lot.

As a general example, a lot of American men and women “say” they like a partner who trims/shaves their pubic hair.
But in China, that’s not the case at all. And in the 1970s, many Americans didn’t shave their privates.

So consider that for a moment.

Really reflect on it.

That deeply sexual, physical preference is actually a product of mimicry and culture.

Not biology.
That’s how deep the rabbit hole runs.

That’s how easy it is to have your desires rewired & overwritten by the people around you—by the words you read and experiences you have.

You are not just malleable—you’re an operating system without a firewall.

The Internet has fooled men into thinking they have to break themselves to get the love of woman.

In reality, they just have to get physically close to one, and Nature will take its course.

(Look at how easily humans fall for coworkers.)
Fame, information, and travel though have distorted these biological mechanisms.

The search scope is wider. The women wait longer. The men take longer.

Everybody waits, in perpetual Limbo, thinking they’re worthy of so much more than they actually are.
It’s all out of proportion.

This frenetic frenzy of sex and distance.

It’s all out of place.

Modernity makes slaves out of men and women alike.

Pain is a prediction. It’s a cost-benefit analysis:

“What are the odds of survival if I continue taking the actions I’m currently taking?”

If odds of survival decrease, signal pain.

But that means it’s adjustable.

Your beliefs about your survival will influence pain.
If you think you’re going to die, everything is going to hurt a lot more.

Fair enough.

Procrastination too is a prediction of survival.

It says, “There’s complexity here we don’t understand. Stay away, lest you lose your life to variables we cannot predict.”
But there are some emotions that do the opposite.

They ask us to linger. Like beauty.

Sunsets, fires, eyes, and beautiful women all ask us to linger.

Why?

Well if the pattern holds, it’ll be because they all increase our odds of survival in some way.

others will have different priors they want to justify but I'll throw out:
- low barriers to entry & distribution
- backlog of talent frozen out of crowded professional hierarchy
- low industry concentration
- primitive analytic tools prevent aggressive optimizing for audience
I'm not the first to note how much this looks like the early days of blogging nor to doomsay about how podcasting will likely follow blogging's trajectory. But I will keep banging this drum in the hopes that people paying attention can at least slow the process down.

1) People are status-seeking monkeys.

2) People seek out the most efficient path to maximizing social capital.

Wei begins with these because few would dispute them but they're also rarely used to analyze social networks.
This is partly bc we lack ways to measure the values & movement of social capital with the same accuracy and precision we do financial capital.

But "social capital is, in many ways, a leading indicator of financial capital, and so its nature bears greater scrutiny."

Even with a stellar developer team and a stellar product, your startup may not grow or survive without a great marketing and sales teams.
2. Start growing your audience before you’ve a product or an idea.

You should start promoting yourself and building your audience before you have a finished product or even before you have a great idea that you want to build.
3. Don’t wait to start building your audience after you’ve launched a product.

Most first-time developers actually ignore marketing.

They’re oblivious to the challenge of attracting people to take a look at something they’ve created.
