"It's not about a thousand scales or modes.

It's not about locking yourself in a room with a metronomes.

It's not about playing boring exercises that make you fall asleep.

It's about learning the language of jazz.

You learn jazz guitar licks.

Licks are the phrases that make up conversation.

If you went to Japan and wanted to have simple conversations,

you don't learn the toughest grammar rules

or how to identify every object in Japanese.

You learn phrases like:

How are you?

Where is the train station?

Where is this hotel?

You use phrases.

In jazz guitar, these are jazz guitar licks.

this is what one way to practice the licks:

1) Pick one lick

2) Practice 4 to 8 notes at a time

3) Get the fingering really smooth

4) Make sure the lick is "singing"
This means you want to make it sound musical!

5) Learn bit by bit until you learn the entire lick.

6) Then, record a simple backing track.

You can use your phone actually (that's what I use).

And then you practice the lick over the chords you played.

This helps you HEAR how the lick sounds like.
