"In the early days, there was no question of calling this a brahmacharya experiment". But "when people started asking questions about his physical contact with women -- with Manu, with Abha, with me -- the idea of brahmacharya experiments was developed." -- Sushila Nayar
Dr Sushila Nayar was Health Minister in the Nehru Cabinet and was one of the many participants in the "experiments". She blurted out this the 1970s.
Contrary to what many think, Gandhi's "experiments" (defined by Jad Adams as a "game of striptease in which there was non-contact sexual activity") began much before his so-called "mahayagna" with his grand-niece Manu became known in 1946.
Gandhi was oblivious to the shattering impact his experiments would have on young women he chose as partners. Manu was told to keep her mouth shut by Gandhi's son and she died in her early 40s, a devastated spinster. The rest hardly ever recalled anything about the experiments.
