1/ I don’t know really anything about Diamond (and was shocked to learn how old he is) but glad @AnandWrites identifies a major culprit in book publishing: no fact-checking unless writer (!!) pays for it.
2/ while I am happy to recommend former @MotherJones fellows to writers wanting fact-checkers—IT IS INSANE that publishing house do not provide and pay for. EVEN for huge projects.
3/ Pop sci/soc/anthro/history/Econ books are the WORST, take it from someone who has managed fact-checkers for 20-odd years, who often find small facts or central assertions in such books to be wrong.

This presents an excellent opportunity for economists and sociologists to study long term outcomes of these grads to an equivalent group )of male HBCU grads?) who don’t get their debt wiped out.
Ultimately such data could be used to discount and even persuade those who deny their own economic privilege.
Similarity I dearly hope many academics are researching the outcomes in states that have extended Medicaid vs those that have not.

It's really difficult to overstate how inextricably these elite private schools are linked with American history and politics, which is to say, with the history of the accumulation of American capital.

This is going to be a thread about unconscious bias in science. I had written before about bias in science (kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/08/04/rac…), but this will be different. I want to share two recent instances in which I had to confront my own unconscious biases, and some reflections.
The first one was after a group of us, three men and two women, received an award and were interviewed. After the article came out one of my female colleagues called me and asked if I thought there was anything odd with the narrative of the article.
I had read it and noticed nothing wrong, so I read it again, this time fact-checking. I still could not see a problem. She forward me an email she sent the (female) journalist. In the email she pointed out, correctly, that only the men were quoted.
