Meanwhile thanks to Talking Pictures I've discovered that during WW2 the actor Peter Butterworth was imprisoned in the camp where Wooden Horse escape happened. He was one of the vaulters. Years later he auditioned for the film and got turned down...because he didn't look the part
He also made his own escape... got caught by the Hitler Youth and joked he'd never work with children after that.
He ended up at Stalag Luft III of Great Escape fame where he met Talbot Rothwell who went on to write the Carry on films.... all the time he was working for MI9. Incredible story.
Must have been something about MI9 because Michael Bentine the Goon was in it. Another one of those fascinating wartime facts.
The Wooden Horse is a superior war film btw. Probably because it was made just 5 years after end of hostilities. Lacks sentimentality and many of the actors were in the war. Feels surprisingly authentic
