Now that 2014 is finally part of the information in the open. That year I was going to talk about the hacks on air. My segment was cut to just the messenger app. vimeo.com/253042384
A year later I was under way more cyber attacks than usual. I started noticing patterns and tracking it. GamerGate took over most of the conversation. Much of what I was watching wasn't being talked about at all.
None of it included how different it was in targeting WoC especially black women online. Any attention I tried to give to this missing component was met with simply ignoring it as a problem.
I've continued to collect those stories and much of it is aligned with these timelines including what happened to me in during 2015 and the mess revealed during 2016 SXSW OHS.
But the patterns remained the same and WoC voices were removed again from the discourse. The missing puzzle pieces if you will. I still have women afraid to speak up about it.
My goal now is to make sure that doesn't happen again. We are still avoiding telling the whole story and giving only part of the narrative with clear omissions because of WHO are the actual targets.
These companies that are willing to shut down and ban accounts of WoC who speak up against racism is part of the cyber warfare. That if they speak out about what is happening they are silenced FIRST. revealnews.org/article/how-ac…
While sitting back and watching specific and focused attacks on WoC from just about everyone including those sitting in office. forbes.com/sites/janetwbu…
If WoC say white people, white women or folks they get banned but WP that repeat the n-word is shrugged off as "freedom of speech." WHITE is an identifier NOT a slur, but let the AG say Anglo Saxon and we are wrong for calling it out.
"A San Marcos father is upset about a post on his daughter's Facebook page. He says someone posted a derogatory term about African Americans but when he reported it to Facebook, administrators said there is nothing they can do."

Case in point about a black woman who felt uneasy and posted about it. Freedom of speech for who exactly? usatoday.com/story/tech/201…
So when WoC sounded the alarm. "Also in 2014, black women on Twitter noticed a spate of accounts posing as hostile black users and outed the fakers under the hashtag #YourSlipIsShowing." nbcnews.com/think/opinion/…
What YEAR was that? These companies testified they also knew but what happened when WoC sounded the alarm?

"Three years later, researchers have confirmed such attempts were part of a Russian propaganda operation intended to exacerbate racial tension."
And folks are wondering why black tech women like me know what we know?
That I need to HIDE my social signal or my Identity so the white boys building the tech along with me aren't uncomfortable with my presence but I'm supposed to sit there while I see exactly how they behave with WoC including myself.
Both WM and WW want their safety while causing harm to us but we are expected to be in a hostile environment and not feel safe nor feel the need to defend ourselves.
I have several aspects of talking about this and dealing with it. I already started talking about this and dissecting the data we have and other groups. There is a common missing thread.
I talked about it in my @INBOUND 2017 talk. Web Utopia Lost: Where do We Go From here.

This is tied my thread here. Those that are "admitting" to being wrong. But the list of folks who are wrong doesn't quite look like those of us who saw dystopia.
Though this has turned into a much bigger problem for us the baseline problem is still the same. There are "certain" folks who get a pass while others are continuously policed in almost every way.
