It’s fascinating watching the Apple community come to terms with the fact that Apple, by finally meeting nearly every one of their demands for a Mac Pro, has made a computer that is 100% not for them.
I think a lot of the perceived demand for a “pro Mac” is really a desire for a “hobbyist Mac,” a Mac for people who like tinkering with computers.
You used to be able to conflate ”pro” and “hobbyist,” back when the most powerful computers were barely good enough for any real work.
But a few years ago, something amazing quietly happened: Standard configurations of off-the-shelf computers became more than adequate for 99.9% of computer work, even for heavy users.
What frustrated computer hobbyists about these machines wasn’t (if they were honest) performance. It was the fact that they were sealed, un-tinkerable boxes.
The new Mac Pro and its crazy display have an audience. But no one from it was present at the unveiling yesterday.
Yes, even the $6000 display with its $1000 stand. It’s true that a 31" Flanders Scientific 4K HDR reference monitor costs $35,000, without a stand. Plus $450 shipping. Arrives in 6–8 weeks.
If you didn’t know that, or never budgeted that out for yourself, then you’re not the target market for the new Apple display.
There are way more people who could conceivably justify the Mac Pro expense than should be considering that display. Most editors and VFX artists would be better off with 2x LG 5K displays at $1300/ea.
Uncomfortable Truth: If you didn’t buy an iMac pro on day one out of need, then it’s very likely that the only reason to buy a Mac Pro this year is an irrational want.
