As a global average, ruminants provide 66% more human edible protein to the global food supply than they consume, thereby contributing to global food security.
Protein, particularly high quality and bioavailable protein is important, but animal-source foods provide a package of essential micronutrients that are key to human development & maintenance of quality of life

The 31.7 million beef cows in the US in 2017 were spread out in all 50 states, but higher densities found in areas with more pasture/grassland. Intermountain western US has lower density of cows as grazing land supports fewer cows/acre.

Compared to 1961, 2016 global beef production is up 138% and GHG emissions directly produced from beef production are up 61%. Human population grew 142%. All data from UN FAOSTAT: fao.org/faostat/en/#da…
GHG emissions didn't grow as much as beef production because the emissions intensity of beef (kg CO2 equivalent emissions/kg beef) went down 32%. However, this global average emissions intensity masks considerable regional variation.
Developing nations had a larger decline in the emissions intensity of beef - 53% - but their emissions per kg of beef are still far higher than the average in developed countries in 2016 (34 vs. 14 kg CO2e/kg beef)

I feel like there's a lot of confusion about digestive systems & dietary classifications of different animals. As an animal scientist, I'm part of a small subset of people on 🌎actually bothered by this. So, a thread of recycled material from my days of teaching @okstateafs
You can classify animals by the digestive anatomy & the type of diet animals consume (typically consume, as there are plenty of examples of "herbivores" occasionally eating animal sourced foods). Anatomy can be things like stomach structure & where most fermentation takes place
There are animals that have most microbial fermentative capacity BEFORE their gastric stomach (e.g., low pH stomach like our own). These animals are classified as "pre-gastric" fermenters. Ruminants are pre-gastric fermenters

Many psychologists seem very concerned about diversity among their faculty and grad students. But, nearly a decade after the WEIRD People problem was identified as a scientific issue, there's been essentially no change in the diversity of psychology PARTICIPANTS. >90% WEIRD
In Psychological Science in 2017, nearly 50% of all samples were American, but NO participants from Africa or Latin America. 6.6% from "Asia", which includes China, India and the entire Middle East. There was NO information on sources for nearly a quarter of the samples! Generic
Developmental psychology is no better. Here are the three top journals in developmental. There are more studies of non-humans primates than of Africans, Asians or Latin Americans!

Digging deeper - you can't contaminate something "with radiation" and the steel is contaminated with (very low levels of) radioactive isotopes…
The difference between "contaminating with radiation" & "contaminating with radioactive isotopes" is important - fundamentally radiation is short lived. This radiation is either alpha particles (a helium nucleus), beta particles (high speed electron), or gamma rays (photons).
The threat to human health of radiation, which is where the issue with "dealing with radiation" in public communication comes in, is complex (like most bits of physics) and it depends on the radiation type, the source, and how the human body deals with the source.

Green New Deal debates have generated controversy over the right strategy to build political coalition for climate reforms. Critics worry that radical + incomplete nature of the GND will undermine efforts and feed the fire of conservative climate scepticism. I disagree. 1/

I see this conversation as boiling down to a debate over an appropriate theory of change. One approach foregounds real constraints in the US political system. This was the approach used from 2003-2009 strategy by groups like EDF and the NRDC. 3/

USDA and FAO data both show fat going up since the dietary guidelines were released--and more than carbohydrates.

Here are USDA and FAO dietary trend data in the attached graphs.

As we can see, the "gap" between carbohydrates and fats narrows over time, indicating a faster rise of fats compared to carbohydrates. 2/n
Below is the above data, but with a breakdown for each nutrient class.

These observations suggests that the claim that reduced fat caused carbohydrates to go up is wrong. 3/n
