The real problem is that, just like Brexit has tragically done much to normalise racism, if this laundry list of past misdeeds is allowed to stand then between now and forever the office of PM will be that little bit more weakened. No going back once pendulum has swung.

There are over 40 million potentially eligible adults who could at least in theory become Prime Minister, and there's exactly one job of Prime Minister available, so it doesn't seem like rocket science to expect candidates for the office to adhere to higher standards.

Bearing in mind that the PM...
- controls £800 billion in annual spending
- has the literal power of life & death (austerity, social security and health policies)
- has their finger on the nuclear button

In other words, this isn't a regular job. Regular rules shouldn't apply!

Note: if you're reading this thread and *not* planning to be our next Prime Minister, I am absolutely not taking aim at you! This is a very specific comment for a very, very specific job.

Oh, and one other thing. For a very, very long time now, the Conservatives have prided themselves as the "Party of law and order" (just like they used to be the "Party of business"). Both self-imposed labels they've fought hard to establish. So we absolutely should expect better.
