(1,7) This Sunday will be my second Fathers Day where I will have the great fortune to be a father to Jesse and my two dogs but where I will not be able to escape who I miss, and that is Jaime. For me, I will not be able to celebrate Fathers Day.
(2,7) How could I possibly do so when my day will include a visit to the cemetery to visit my forever 14 daughter? For me, the phrase Happy Fathers Day no longer applies. No need to send me messages saying this. Instead, for me, I will make Fathers Day about my role as a dad.
(3,7) My hope is that all dads will join me and help me to honor our roles as dads, as the protectors of our families. Let's flip Fathers Day and instead of making it about us, lets make it about our love for our families, for our kids. Flip Fathers Day and how it is celebrated.
(4,7) Instead of waiting for cards, go buy a card or a gift for your kids and your spouse. Tell them how much you love them and how much their safety and security means to you. Trust me, you never know when you may become a victim of gun violence. Don't miss this chance.
(5,7) Yes, instead of making Fathers Day about you, make it about those that you love.

Dads, finally, join me in this fight for gun safety. Moms and kids have been fierce and relentless. The dads, not so much. That must change.
(6,7) It is a sign of strength to tell your family how much you love them and will fight to keep them safe. Dads, let's get together and organize and unite to fight this violence destroying our families and our communities.
(7,7) I personally will go off of FB and Twitter for the rest of this weekend to be with my family, but I will leave all dads with one request. For the next 365 days, please tweet the following every day:

It is time for me to share a very personal moment and it is about VP @JoeBiden. In the weeks following Jaime's murder, I cannot think of a person who did more to help me heal. It started with a phone call in the week immediately following her murder.
It was not a fast call. He allowed me to stay on for as long as needed and it went for almost an hour. I remember that he was on a train traveling. He then was in Florida 3 weeks later and he invited me and another parent to meet with him. Again, I was thinking a hand shake.
He had a group waiting to hear him speak. Instead, he met with us for about 45 minutes and he made us feel as if nothing else mattered. He spoke to us about getting through loss, he spoke about how we all grieve differently, he spoke to us about mission and purpose.

(1,4) A moment of truth!!! On Thursday I had a meeting with some from the White House very close to the President. I was intending to keep it private as it was just a first meeting. While we discussed gun safety, I highlighted language and how the language from the WH and
(2,4) other places has deadly consequences. Less than 24 hours later we had the New Zealand attack. The reason that I am going public is because of the Presidents words in response to the attack. The inability to be strong and call this what it was is frightening and only
(3,4) encouraging to those who want to kill again. This WH either shows leadership and joins in a mission for public safety in this country and around the world, or they are knowingly and complictly egaging in words and actions that are at the root causes of vilence.

@manueloliver00, @TedDeutch and I were interviewed and asked about the Presidents failure to mention Parkland and gun violence. That was when we realized had the killer been an illegal immigrant, the President would have mentioned it. Bottom line, he failed tonight.
He failed to mention our loved ones who were killed by an American male. Even when he mentioned the heroism of the Pittsburgh sivivors, he failed to mention the fact that a gun, and AR 15, made its way into a temple.
40,000 people die a year from gun violence, and this President did not consider that an actual emergency. Sad to realize that if all gun violence were committed by illegal aliens, this President would be working overtime to do something about it.

Last night I touched on this a bit & it's inspired me to tell a story I've never told before in public. My grandfather, newly married, came to the USA from Cuba in order to make a better life for himself and his young wife. He came over before her and then something happened.
WWII broke out. He was given a choice, go back to Cuba or serve in the military. The carrot? If he he made it out alive he would be made a citizen. He was already in his mid thirties and in 1943, at 36, he became a US citizen. My grandmother became a citizen 9 years later.
My grandfather loved being in the army, he showed me how to shine shoes properly, how to fold my pants and make my bed the RIGHT way. More importantly he'd constantly remind me, shoulders back, stand straight. When I feel myself slouching, I still hear his voice.
