When I hear 'you're so lucky, how did you...' these days I handle it with a lot of grace. I do this because I understand that many are being introduced to us at different points in our journey.
Some are introduced to us during our bouts with misplaced outrage, others when we've used racial slurs that prevented us from attending our beloved ivy league schools, and others on a tweet that goes viral.
Depending on the context of the 'you're so lucky, how did you...' comment, my replies may vary but on the contrary - I am flawed and blessed. I've lost count on how many times I've heard no when I tried covering an event,
a game or anything related to games media. We're overcomers of doubt and backlash.
I'm a kid in a candy store who survived ESL, watched sitcoms to improve my English, and used games as my coping mechanism(s) for my lack of social skills during that season. We're not lucky.
Many of our skillsets and talents were forged through pain and isolation. Yet, we continue to persevere. Why? Because we know there's someone who is struggling like we did and we hope our content or our journey encourages them to go - and be awesome! ❤️
