5 years ago, @DickGottfried & @DianeSavino fought for a medical marijuana program & we stood with their effort to bring medical marijuana to NY. However, in the final hours, what resulted was one of the most restrictive programs in the US. AND it was structurally inequitable.
Groups like @Housingworks & @VOCAL-NY fought side by side with cancer patients & kids with epilepsy to get medical marijuana for New Yorkers. But the program--as enacted--has benefitted them the least.
@DPA-NY has always fought for comprehensive marijuana reform. Although the MRTA did not pass this year, we know that patients remain in the crosshairs of our state’s draconian policies--and they need relief.
If the medical marijuana program is expanded this legislative session, the people who fought hardest to pass medical but have not been able to use the program MUST benefit.
Any medical expansion MUST include:
-Subsidy program to provide MMJ for ppl who can’t access it now w ROs granting cannabis to Medicaid and low-income patients
-Homegrow for patients
-Cap on # of RO locations that can sell in an adult-use MJ market
-Social equity biz licenses
