Yes, this jarring photo is of 1936 Nazi Germany.

Nazis making the sieg heil salute, mandatory for all German citizens as a demonstration of loyalty to the Führer, his party, and his nation.

The Führer, Adolf Hitler, is present.
But hidden among the sea of arms making one of the most hateful gestures in history, there’s someone who isn’t.

Despite being surrounded by Nazis and in the presence of Hitler, they conspicuously refuse.
His name is August Landmesser.

A worker in Hamburg, Germany. He refused to perform the Nazi salute with the others. He also ran afoul of the Nazi Party over his relationship with Irma Eckler, a Jew, for which he was imprisoned. Eckler was sent to a concentration camp and killed.
This photo is a symbol.

A symbol of a single person resisting in their own peaceful & simple way.

Though a photo of hate, it’s not a hateful photo.

It’s hopeful.
But @Twitter disagrees.
.@TwitterSupport suspended the account of @charley_ck14 pending the removal of the photo as the banner of her profile.

Unclear if someone reported it as a terms of service violation or if Twitter is automatically searching for and scrubbing the photo.

Either way, they’re wrong.
.@jack, what are you doing?
Whatever you’re doing, do it to me too.

I’ve attached the photo to every tweet in this thread.

To dare you.
.@jack removing hateful content from Twitter has to be the highest priority.

But not at the expense of common sense.

Not at the cost of erasing a historical photo of resisting the Nazis at a time so many try to erase any proof the Holocaust even happened.

Dear @TwitterSupport:

I am retweeting these photos to express my disappointment & disapproval with your decision to suspend an account for using a historical photo symbolizing peaceful resistance and hope standing up to a sea of hate.

Please review & revise your standards.
