Hi, Alana,

You might want to consult with a lawyer before you make legal pronouncements. Please allow me to clear this up for you.

Under current law, if asylum seekers arrive at the border without documents, they can do one of two things . . .
1/
Asylum seekers can :
💠present themselves for admission at a port of entry, and claim asylum (fear of persecution) or
💠 they can enter illegally and present themselves to an official as quickly as possible and claim asylum or “fear of persecution.” (section 208 of the INA)
2/ They then are legally entitled to a hearing to determine if they are eligible for asylum status.

A few weeks ago, I spent time in the Karnes Detention Center as a volunteer lawyer and worked with a number of asylum seekers.
3/ Every person I met with followed the laws and entered the country according to statutory requirements.

So they didn't "illegally migrate." They followed the law.

It's hard to believe anyone could so carelessly and blatantly misstate the law.

I also suspect that you understand how dangerous your lies are.

Similarly, Trump family members using private email servers for gov. business shows that the GOP knew HRC’s alleged wrongdoing was no big deal.

2/ Trump's defense to the Carroll allegation—“She wasn’t my type”—is not only an insult, it implies that only attractive women can be raped, and that rape springs from male sexual urges.

Conservatives and authoritarians have a tendency to fall in line. Authoritarians like strong leaders, uniformity, and sameness. Conservatives value loyalty.

On the other hand, liberals and . . .
3/3 . . . non-authoritarians, who value diversity and individuality, naturally tend too splinter.

This is one of many reasons those who Saunders & NGO call right wing authoritarians tend to have so much power beyond their numbers. See👇

(Thread) The Uses of Outrage

When Trump talks about ICE raids at the same time he announces his plans for re-election, you might think he is trying to excite his base for the new campaign.

I suggest he another motives as well.
1/ Trump also seeks—among other things—to enrage his critics.

Dear Liberals & Democrats: Remember that Trump WANTS to enrage you. He’s trying hard. And he isn’t afraid to resort to cruelty to do it.

That simple truth (he's trying to make you mad) isn't intuitive.
2/ Each time Trump does something outrageous, he accomplishes 4 things:
💠He keeps his base excited.
💠He enrages his critics.
💠He batters democratic institutions, and
💠He fulfills his campaign promise, which was to "protect" his followers from their “enemies.”

UPDATE: The Presidential proclamation barring certain non-citizens from seeking #asylum after crossing the Southern border is out. How will they limit it to the #MigrantCaravan? How much more illegal can this thing get?

(This thread is going to be a sequel to yesterday's on the "final interim rule" rushed into effect in anticipation of this proclamation, so you might want to read that one first.)

These #s appear to be the entire justification for the proclamation, and they badly need context. They may sound scary if you're new to the issue, but check out the overall historical picture & tell me this is a natl. emergency worthy of suspending a 4,000 year-old legal right

PWDV Act, 2005, gives a broad definition of what qualifies as ‘domestic abuse’. It includes physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic abuse. Section 3 reads:
The Act provides for a ‘Protection Officer’ to help you through various processes under the law. This Officer can help you file the complaint, tell you about your rights, make an application to the Magistrate for you, etc.

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).

Here are just a few of many reasons.
(1) CRIMINALIZATION of unlawful presence in the United States: White supremacy writ into law. For past 228 years, simply *being in U.S.* w/o permission was a civil offense w/no consequence other than deportation.
(NB: This was quickly rejected in 2005, but much more likely now)
(2) ONE HUNDRED THIRTY BILLION UNITED STATES TAXPAYER DOLLARS to fully militarize the Mexican border.

Even @Heritage, which otherwise mostly likes the bill, balked at this as "hard to justify." You don't say.
