/Here's a potential odd quirk-based on my reading of the Call for the 2020 Democratic Nat'l Convention (sec. IX(C)(7)(b), (d)) it seems a candidate may have to receive only 1,885 votes to win the nomination during the 1st round of voting, but 2,267 to win during any later rounds
/ The Convention Call has the temporary rules for the convention, which the convention is likely to ratify & make permament. It says that a candidate must receive "[a] majority vote of all Convention delegates eligible to vote on the ballot in question" to win the nomination.
/ "On the first ballot of the presidential roll call, only pledged delegates will be permitted to vote," with one exception I'll discuss below. Since only pledged delegates are able to vote (there are 3,768 of them), only a majority of that number (1,884) is required to win.
/ All delegates - including both pledged and automatic (i.e., superdelegates) - are permitted to vote on second and subsequent ballots. There are a total of 4,533 delegates at the convention, meaning 2,267 votes would be required to win a majority in those later rounds.
/ Thus, the number of delegate votes needed to win the Democratic nomination for President appears to increase after the first round of voting.
/ Also, a person can win the Democratic nomination for president in the first round of balloting despite an overall majority of all convention delegates opposing them.
/ An exception in the call states that automatic delegates may participate in the 1st round of voting only if the number of delegates pledged to a presidential candidate exceeds a majority of both pledged + automatic delegates.
