I consider myself an environmentalist, I believe we should do whatever we reasonably can to protect the globe from anthropomorphic changes. Having said this there are quite a few issues that I disagree with Greenpeace and other environmental organizations.
On wind and solar: Even though I am a co founder of Eolia Renovables and we deployed hundreds of wind and solar farms, wind and solar alone can't fix energy. Batteries are not ready. The real solution is wind+solar+nuclear. Nuclear is carbon neutral and works 24 hours.
While others consider gas "natural" and better than coal I consider burning natural gas for electricity awful for the environment and coal worse. I favor electrification of transportation supported by nuclear, perfect to charge batteries at night when there is no solar.
While I consider global warming and rising sea level a fact, we don't know yet the extent of which these problems will impact us. To me the urgent reason to eliminate emissions is pollution which causes tremendous human illnesses now.sciencedaily.com/terms/air_poll…
But for some reason the media focuses very little on the millions who die from pollution and speaks instead about how we may run out of coffee because of global warming. Pollution which kills every day is not ranked as important as it should be.
I also disagree with those who fight genetically modified crops. Humans have genetically modified crops for thousands of years and thanks to that we can feed 8 billion. The only thing that has changed is that we got better at this and that is a good thing.
I question the wisdom of promoting solutions that are food related but not scalable. I favor some policies, like eating local, but not others like eating organic when that produces much lower yields and only the rich can afford it. Whatever works must work for everyone.
Regarding eating cow meat I have cut on my consumption and I recommend everyone do the same. Not stop but eat less. Cows are great contributors to climate change and resource depletion. Other meats are less damaging to the environment.
My general view on food is that you should eat all the food groups, variety, what is killing people is not this or that diet, what is mostly killing people is under eating (starvation) and over eating (obesity). It is not this or that food that you can buy in the supermarket.
Lastly I favor urban living. It is counterintuitive but Manhattan is much more environmental than Long Island. What is best for the environment is clustered humans who walk or take the subway, share heating and AC and the planet has more of a division of humans and nature.
