By the way, in an interview with me Jay Inslee called for impeachment proceedings. It's notable because now almost every Dem candidate (except Biden and Tulsi, for different reasons) has done so, which reflects the incentives operative in the party nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-ope…
By my count, the following candidates have *not* overtly called for impeachment proceedings to begin, even if they gesture in that direction:

Biden
Bennet
Buttigieg
Delaney
Klobuchar

Opposed on the substance:

Tulsi
Gravel

Unclear:

Yang
Williamson
Sestak

82 House Dems have now called for impeachment proceedings to begin, according to the latest tally from @ImpeachInqCount. A new Rep. comes out for it almost every day. Expect the Mueller testimony to be the breaking point

WaPo has a big article suggesting that Joseph Mifsud was in fact a Russian agent of some kind. They cite unnamed "officials" (could be Comey, Clapper, etc.) who claim Mifsud had been identified as a "potential" agent. Anyone could "potentially" be anything washingtonpost.com/politics/the-e…
Given the dubious sourcing (WaPo provides no justification for why the unnamed US "officials" are granted anonymity and not quoted directly) this looks a lot like a preemptive rebuttal of the forthcoming Barr findings, which could present a very different portrayal of Mifsud
NYT confirmed that the FBI sent a young female spy to "meet with" Papadopoulos in London under the auspices of Stefan Halper, another confirmed FBI informant. Yet WaPo depicts it as a "fringe" theory that Mifsud could've also been working in some capacity with US/western intel

The US tried to engineer a coup to install this person into power and it completely failed, just like every other Bolton/Pompeo initiative. Seems like that should be a bigger story
As noted in the article, "When Trump launched his re-election campaign in Orlando on June 18, he made no mention of Venezuela." Why hasn't this been remarked upon? Part of the political calculation in engineering the coup was a (failed) appeal to certain FL voter demographics
This article gives a sense of how fragmented, unwieldy, and corrupt the military command structure in Venezuela has become. Even in that context, US failed to engineer a coup. Which reflects a general diminishment of US power, even in its own hemisphere reuters.com/investigates/s…

Belittling the Korean peace process out of reflexive hatred for Trump is so lazy and myopic. The anti-diplomacy sentiment Warren expresses here is rejected by the vast majority of South Koreans (except a small faction of reactionary hardliners)
Similarly, Klobuchar today likened Trump entering North Korean territory to "going over and talking to your dictator next door and bringing them a hot dish over the fence." Amazingly facile and arrogant; ignores any consideration of what actual Koreans want
The way most Democrats talk about the Korea peace process is absolutely pathetic

A note on #impeachment -

In a court of law, under non-presidential circumstances, impeachment is a tool litigation attorneys use to discredit the opposing side's witnesses at trial. When said witness takes the stand under oath attys. present evidence contrary to what the witness
claims. This weakens the other side's case by discrediting impeached witnesses's testimony. Once a witness has been impeached - by presentment of inconsistent testimony - the judge/jury can no longer use the impeached witnesses's testimony in reaching a verdict.
Simply put, they aren't trustworthy. In the case of Presidential impeachment that broad definition of impeachment applies, but the impeachment tool is used for a very different purpose. Under the Constitution, a sitting President cannot be tried in a court of law for anything.

Continued dithering by Dem leaders on impeaching Trump has had an extremely damaging effect on the power of #impeachment to protect the rule of law.

They thought it would strengthen their hand to appear reluctant, but waffling has had the opposite effect.
I hate to say this, but I increasingly believe that #impeachment will be far less effective now than it would have been out of the gate in January.

Mealy-mouthed Dem excuses for inaction have telegraphed to the public that impeachment is entirely a partisan political calculus.
Just to be clear: I believe more strongly than ever that Dems should #impeach NOW. And it isn't about Mueller. Incitement of violence against the press is enough. What this thread is saying is that #impeachment will have less teeth than it would have a few months ago.

2. As with most issues before Congress, substance and politics are closely related but distinguishable. As to substance, the argument -- persuasive to me -- is that obstruction of justice, contacts with Russians seeking to influence a US election, corruption and the rest...
3...will do mortal damage to American democracy if tolerated. Not proceeding toward impeachment proceedings means tolerating all of these things, though it is possible to deceive oneself on that point. The political argument @NateSilver538 makes is about American voters.

House debate is presented, then some private deliberation takes place in the Senate and then the Senate take up a debate and conviciton vote, this public debate and conviction could last weeks, each day forcing republicans to debate and go on record on trump...

“He’s just not worth it” is brilliant messaging.

Setting aside the actual question, this message blows up GOP messaging in advance of 2020.

Pelosi is saying to the GOP, “You want to make this election about defending that pathetic orange sniveling bully? Have fun with that.”
Pelosi goes on to say that “unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan” we shouldn’t go down the road of impeachment.

BIPARTISAN is the key word there.

“Compelling and overwhelming” evidence exists.

But Republicans stand by Trump anyway.

Our Founders anticipated someone like Trump. They never anticipated a full 50% of lawmakers would support that person no matter what.

That reality puts Pelosi and other Dem leaders in a challenging position.

Without some GOP participation, impeachment will be mere theater.
