Dear Chairman Nadler,
As a New Yorker and as an American, I am writing to ask why you refuse to open #impeachment proceedings in the face of rampant lawlessness, abuse, and corruption on the part of Donald Trump and his Republican cronies.
From incitement of violence against the free press in contravention of the First Amendment, to violations of the emoluments clause, to atrocities on the southern border, to obstruction of justice, there is an overwhelming imperative to #ImpeachTrump.
Chairman Nadler, for most of the 35 years since I escaped war in Lebanon and settled in New York City, I have lived in your district on the west side of Manhattan, moving from the Upper West Side to Battery Park City after the September 11 attacks.
My New York City roots go back a century. European and Ukrainian Jewish immigrants on my mother's side. Christian Lebanese immigrants on my father's side. As an American displaced by war in the Middle East, America has always been a beacon of hope and safety.
But over the decades, I've watched the Republican Party steadily degrade the rule of law to serve powerful anti-democratic interests. I always believed the Democratic Party would serve as a bulwark against autocracy, against fascism, against tyranny.
But with the Trump presidency, the GOP's extremism, its outright subversion of our most treasured norms and principles, has been met with an unacceptably tepid response from the Democratic leadership. Republicans are violating the Constitution at every turn.
The AG is a tool of the Trump campaign. The @senatemajldr is stacking the judiciary. White nationalists like Stephen Miller are dehumanizing and torturing asylum-seeking families. Abortion bans criminalizing women's reproductive health and rights are spreading.
We are at a dangerous inflection point. Our democracy is on the line. When a Tea Party Republican like @justinamash shows more fealty to the rule of law than the Democratic Party leadership, something is terribly wrong. This cannot continue.
“The purpose of the whole impeachment process is to protect the integrity of liberty and of the rule of law and of government, to protect against a person with aggrandized power or who destroys the separation of powers."
THOSE ARE YOUR WORDS.
Respectfully, the excuses for inaction on #impeachment insult our intelligence. It matters not one iota if the GOP sycophants in the Senate won't convict. For the sake of democracy, we MUST place principle above party and above politics. It is time to #impeach.
This is a moment of truth for the Democratic Party and for America. It is a moment that calls for true leadership, not mealy-mouthed excuses and dithering.
#Impeachment is now the ONLY constitutional remedy to permanently mark Trump's horrendous presidency.
