Another term for "serious-minded, professional players" is "replacement-level talent". All of these guys are replacement-level players except Randle.
How much these guys are worth next year per 538 CARMELO projections / how much the Knicks are paying them. They're paying $65m for $33m of value:
Randle: $19.2m / $21.0m
Bullock: $5.4 / $10.5
Ellington: $5.1 / $8.0
Gibson: $2.1 / $10.0
Portis: $1.4 / $15.5
TOTAL: $33.2 / $65.0

This makes things quite a bit better, but even so, they could have rented out all that cap space allocated to the non-Randles to facilitate other deals and probably secured a couple assets (late 1st round picks etc.) in the process.
Also the Elfrid Payton deal (just announced now) is fine. CARMELO (which has long had a weird crush on point guards who can't shoot) has him at $11.1m a year and he's getting paid $8.0m.
This team is going to be baaaaaaad though. Literally everyone on the roster either can't shoot or can't defend (unless Barrett is a good NBA defender, which is rare for 1st-year wings).
