Surprisingly, given how directly he dealt with other holidays, Charles Schulz did few Fourth of July strips, and no TV specials. Perhaps his own sense of patriotism was the cause. Here's a telling letter he sent in 1970.
Everyone who's seen "A Charlie Brown Christmas" or read the Peanuts strip in depth knows how important religion was to Schulz. But he did *not* care for current trends of equating Christianity with Americanism, which has only gotten worse. Here's an interview snippet.
It's hard to know what he would've made of our current predicament. I imagine we'd have seen perhaps a strip or two like this one from May 2, 1958.
I'm by no means saying that Schulz wasn't a patriotic guy. His military service in WWII was extremely important to him. Here's a thread I did a while back on how he celebrated Veterans Day in the strip.
And here are just a few of the D-Day strips that Schulz completed. Later in life, Schulz would donate $1 million for the erection of a D-Day memorial.
Schulz, of course, did complete an 8-part miniseries called "This Is America, Charlie Brown," which addressed such topics as the Constitution, the transcontinental railroad, and the music of this country. I guess that's kind of a stand-in for a 4th of July special.
And just to be clear: There are 4th of July strips in Peanuts. Here's an example of one from this day in 1960. But I guess my point is that there aren't as many as I would've expected.
A few more things: The letter in the first tweet was posted on Facebook months ago by Joel Lipton, who received it from Schulz. The Schulz Museum wrote about it here, in case you want to learn more: schulzmuseum.org/the-circle-con…
And because some people were asking, the snippet in the second tweet where Schulz talks about religion and Americanism comes from an article by David Poling in The Republic of Columbus, IN, on March 9, 1968. It's entitled: "Religion Is Our Gratitude."
