In my series on the 1965 War, today I take a look at the Battle of Dograi, that took place on this date. One of the bloodiest ever battles in the War, where the Indian Army managed to pull off a victory against all odds.
The capture of Dograi meant the Indian Army came within striking distance of Lahore, before the ceasefire came into effect on September 23, 1965. One really bloody battle, that had close quarters street fights, hand to hand combats, and heavy casualties on both sides.
The heroes of Dograi were the 3 Jat Battalion, led by the maverick Lt Col Desmond Hayde. An Anglo Indian of Irish origin, whose father was with the Railways, he was noted for his derring do, leading from the front often.

Thank You Madam PM @Vidyut for giving me the honour of serving this great nation as a Union Minister for Law.

As a practising Advocate, I'm well aware of the challenges before the justice delivery system. Being an insider, someone who deals with it, someone who worships it 1/4
Someone who takes a great pride in it, someone who rues the inadequacies of it, someone who's shocked by the pendency, intrigued by the casual approach of the stakeholders, appalled by the ignorance of founding principles of the Constitution amongst judiciary -

#AltSarkar 2/4
I'm determined do my bit for restoration of the majesty of the justice delivery system. I am determined to do my bit for making Courts / Tribunals the temples of justice as against - as some lawyers jokingly say - cooling chambers.

The scrapping of Article 370 was envisioned by PM Modi, as things to be done in his 2nd Term, in about 2yrs ago. How did he know that he will get such a thumping majority? In August last yr, Mr. Satpal Singh was appointed as the new Governor..
#Article370
After the state Assembly stood dissolved following PDP-BJP divorce. President’s Rule was extended for another 6 months with effect from July 3.
The well thought out and calibrated strategy was planned out even before these events.
Read the Gazzette of India issued yesterday. It is a very smartly drafted matter. Article 370 became part of the Indian Constitution only in 1954, 4 years after India adopted it’s own Constitution.

There is an optimism is air about National Medical Commission Bill.
Lot of people believe that opening up medical education to private sector will improve number of doctors in circulation and reduce cost of medical education.

Let's see if this is possible.
Presently there are ~550 medical colleges in India producing ~70,000 MBBS doctors every year.
Half of these colleges are government colleges. They charge 0-1,50,000 as fees per yr. (depends on category/caste).
Pvt medical colleges charge 7,50,000 to 18,00,000 per year.
Except bribes, cost of setting up a medical college is -
1. Land and infrastructure
2. Teaching staff salaries
3. Non teaching staff salaries
4. Expense of running a free hospital
5. Running costs

All these are substantial costs and are mandatory per law.

Today is the Jayanti of Rash Behari Bose, founder of INA, mentor to Netaji. a brilliant revolutionary, entrepreneur who set up the first Indian restaurant in Japan, the brains behind the entire INA movement.
There is a whole lot to Rash Behari Bose, one of the masterminds behind the plan to assassinate Lord Hardinge, the Viceroy, a key mover in the Ghadr conspiracy, meant to weaken the British army from inside, a master of disguise, camouflage and the founder of the INA
In many ways Rash Behari was the opposite of his more famed namesake, Subash Chandra Bose. Netaji was a brilliant orator, charismatic leader, who cud sway the masses. Rash Behari on the other hand was more subdued, the brains behind the scene, a strategist.

Thread.

My tweet thread about reality of healthcare in rural and tribal area caused some storms in the teacup. so i am writing another thread about rural practice.

1. My exposure to rural practice is as assistant to urologist during my medical college days, rural internship,
and as visiting psychiatrist to rural areas around Pune in my initial days of practice. I do have many friends and classmates who continue work in rural and semi rural areas and their experiences are helpful too.
2. Enough has been written about lack of infrastructure and basic facilities in such areas that makes doctors or any person reluctant to live and work there. I will not get into it again.
3. Two issues that are avoided in public discourse are caste equations and harassment.

"Padmashree can't compensate grave neglect"

1. This year's Republic day honour list includes many doctors who are not based in and around metro cities. This is a welcome change.
It includes Dr & Mrs Kolhe from maharashtra. Their work to get affordable healthcare to
tribal areas of Maharashtra is well documented. Their honour with Padmashree is well deserved and a joy to all who are interested in healthcare for all.
3. Every state of India has doctors who work selflessly in remote areas where no doctors are available. These doctors
give away all comforts of civilised life and spend it in service of under served communities.
4. In Maharashtra, we have Amte Family (3 generations), Bang family (2 generations), Bawiskar family and Kolhe family devoted to this work.
5. All of them have worked to improve

Today is the Punya Thithi of Rash Behari Bose, the brain behind the entire INA movement, revolutionary leader, key player in the Ghadar conspiracy, first Indian to set up a restaurant in Japan, evaded British 17 times, a legend in his own right.
If Netaji came out in the fight as Garibaldi of the INA movement, Rash Behari’s part in the drama was more than that of a Mazzini- Thakin Nu, ex premier of Myanmar.
And that aptly summed up Rash Behari Bose, he was the brains behind the scene, setting up INA from scratch.
In many ways Rash Behari was the opposite of his more famed namesake, Subash Chandra Bose. Netaji was a brilliant orator, one who could motivate people to shed blood for the cause of freedom, the charismatic leader, who could sway the masses like none another.

Before spewing venom against PM Modi & propagating lies, just learn who sent all rescue teams to Kerala?
Anyone from madrassa or lslamic orgs volunteered?
Your @CMOKerala is just watching helplessly.
@Beingind
Kerala provided Rs.5cr to Pakistan for flood relief.
The @CMOKerala noted that the floods had caused considerable hardships to the people of Pakistan. Hence the decision to provide the assistance.

Does he know the pathetic condition of common man in Kerala Or taken for granted?

Today I was invited to give a talk to first year medical students of Bharati Vidyapeeth New Medical College, Pune.
I am alumnus of this college (1990 batch).
Some points covered in the talk-
1. Comradarie, friendship and a sense of community is valuable. Make friends,
Nourish friendships, help each other. As doctors except your colleagues nobody will understand your difficulties. Provide that support.
2. Lady doctors have even more difficult job in our patriachic society. It is fine to be a good doc. You don't even need to take ALL roles
Pushed on you by society. Support each other as fellow lady doctors. Friends who give active help are gold dust. Let's do that for each other.
3. Learn to speak simple language . This is valued by patients and their families. Best way to achieve this is by teaching each other

#AadhaarIsSafe 1/
I'm totally amused to read the various headlines around the @rssharma3 challenge! Clearly shows one of three things:
1) Knowledge of #Aadhaar @UIDAI is poor
2) Biased people take away what they want to believe
3) Both
No data is hacked/stolen or misuse-able
#AadhaarIsSafe 2/
Fact of the matter is that #Aadhaar only has 5 pieces of information - Name, Address, DOB, Gender, Photo, Photo and optionally Email Address, Phone#. I know of NO service that lets you subscribe without the first 5 items and most likely one of 6 & 7.
#AadhaarIsSafe 3/
The biggest cost most service providers face is verifying that the data is indeed accurate and knowing that the person cannot come a second time with a different IDentity. That is precisely what #Aadhaar is designed and architected to do!

Today @IndianMedAssn has called for a nationwide 12 hr strike to protest against National Medical Council Bill to be introduced in Parliament today.
What are these objections? How can they seriously hurt you as a patient? Please go through this thread -
2. Some good stuff - Old Medical Council of India will be shut down and 4 new bodies will replace it. This will bring in more specific expertise and faster decision making.
3. All four bodies will have few doctors and remaining all members (overwhelming majority) to be nominated by central government. States have little or no say
