There's something pretty fucking tiring going on.
An treaty is signed or a policy enacted that makes the world better than it was. Usually after long negotiation. It's not ideal, but it's the best that was likely achievable in the existing environment.
Then, decades later, in the
new environment created by the accomplishment at issue, come along a new group of people who badmouth and question the morals/integrity/intentions of the people who made the agreement or policy under which the new crowd has operated all their lives.
Intentionally not recognizing
the advancement for what it is or was is shallow at best and bad faith at worst.
Of course you can do better today. You can because the stage was set for you to do better by the previous hard work of generations before you.
Real lasting change takes a long time. Mistakes and
missteps occur along the way.
But the big idea you have today wouldn't have been possible to achieve 20 or 30 or 40 years ago.
In human history, large scale systematic changes in a society rarely occurred without bloodshed.
You're not going to get everything you want. Doesn't
mean you should stop trying. It does mean that you shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the achievable. Take the victories you can, celebrate them for the victories they are, and then fight again for the next one.
But don't think for a minute that you're the only person to
ever dream of a better day.
