Barr sided against his own Civil Rights Division at @TheJusticeDept, which wanted to pursue charges against NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo, who killed Eric Garner with an illegal chokehold. They say intent was the issue. So he had to willfully kill him? cnn.com/2019/07/16/pol…
Pantaleo is still a New York police officer. The commissioner will make the final decision as to his discipline, which could be anything from a firing to docking vacation time. There is still no verdict from his disciplinary trial that was held in June. nyti.ms/2k2SgS6

I disagree strongly with this, and not just because enslaved Africans weren’t immigrants. I digress. This is a bad take. Everyone’s family has people who have gotten sick, yes. The experience that we all have in this health care system after we get sick, though, is not the same.
Hearing a politician’s story may bore some folks, but we remove the relevance of personal experience from policy, we boost arguments against diversity in several arenas, including elected offices. Anyone can make policy for everyone. But we’ve seen where lived experience matters.
There are several politicians who grandstand, using their personal stories to promote their own legends rather than their policies. However, there are plenty who have stories worth telling, stories that inform us about their policy priorities and strategies. That’s worth knowing.

“Whose policies have focused on the minority community” is one way of putting it, yes.
“Sunday news show,” once a public service, has largely become a misnomer. These programs have largely become a bin for recycling the same punditry and personalities, no matter whether they are intellectually dishonest and uniformed. They are not meeting the challenge of the time.
There’s no journalistic purpose to having a “Trump defender” on your news program if that person is going to be intellectually dishonest. As this can be presumed these days, if that person goes unchallenged, you’ve done a disservice to your audience. But why bring them on at all?

Five years ago I was motivated to publicly challenge disinformation about “Irish slavery” when I saw @Rubberbandits, various other influential Irish personalities & an Irish national newspaper sharing a particularly insidious piece of propaganda. We’ve all come a long way since.
The propaganda that was in high circulation at that time included the following false claims (which I then spent years debunking, contextualising and refuting, line by line, as the general explanation was not effective)

1. That an “Irish slave trade” operated from 1625 to 1839.
2. That “the Irish experienced the horrors of slavery as much (if not more in the 17th Century) as the Africans did.”

3. That “Irish slaves” were treated “worse” than enslaved Africans.

4. That “Irish slaves” were “cheaper” than enslaved Africans.

Five years ago today, two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three people died, and hundreds were injured. Later that week, all hell broke loose in the Boston area. We still don't know who built the bombs.
In 2015, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found guilty of bombing the marathon and killing an MIT police officer. He was sentenced to death. The FBI seems to have moved on. But key facts in the case are missing. This is a thread about the loose ends.
The bombings happened on Marathon Monday, April 15, 2013, at around 2:50pm. For days, the government wouldn't say anything about whether it had suspects. Then, on Thursday April 18, at around 5:20pm, the FBI released photos of its suspects.
