I disagree strongly with this, and not just because enslaved Africans weren’t immigrants. I digress. This is a bad take. Everyone’s family has people who have gotten sick, yes. The experience that we all have in this health care system after we get sick, though, is not the same.
Hearing a politician’s story may bore some folks, but we remove the relevance of personal experience from policy, we boost arguments against diversity in several arenas, including elected offices. Anyone can make policy for everyone. But we’ve seen where lived experience matters.
There are several politicians who grandstand, using their personal stories to promote their own legends rather than their policies. However, there are plenty who have stories worth telling, stories that inform us about their policy priorities and strategies. That’s worth knowing.
