The @Policy_Exchange report on @ExtinctionR calls for expanding surveillance: "the Commission for Countering Extremism should ensure that far left, anarchist and environmentalist extremism are sufficiently recognised and challenged within a wider national strategy on extremism".
The report's ideological position on what supposedly constitutes "extremism" is clearly stated: "more also needs to be done to counter the extreme message of Extinction Rebellion who argue that catastrophe can only be averted if the free market and economic growth are abandoned"
Such subjective judgements are why David Anderson QC, a former independent reviewer of UK terrorism legislation, has called the ‘domestic extremism’ label applied by police to a wide range of campaigning groups ‘manifestly deficient’, netpol.org/2019/06/19/dom…
This is why we reject completely any "wider national strategy on extremism" and are campaigning for the police to end the categorising of campaigning and protest activities as ‘domestic extremism’. Please sign up in support of the campaign netpol.org/domestic-extre…
To understand the politics behind this report, it's worth noting the last Policy Exchange publication by co-authors Richard Walton and Tom Wilson condemned the APPG on British Muslims' definition of Islamophobia as "putting the country at greater risk from Islamist Terrorism"
Senior levels of UK policing and the surveillance state are pushing hard for the Commission for Countering Extremism (@CommissionCE) to deliver everything the state is asking for. We expect that this supposedly "independent" body will fully comply
