we have to take joy where we can find it and one thing i really get a kick out of is watching people explain horrible bits of internet or popular culture in court. seeing a US attorney ask an FBI agent what a “thot” is really tickled me.
see also: trying to sit quietly while a literal nazi explains what gab is to a judge, hearing a lawyer use the “two wolves” meme sincerely in closing arguments, the time elmer woodard pronounced URL “earl,” etc.
it’s complicated because the context of all of these instances was something truly horrible - cases about hate crimes and terrorism and relentless harassment of someone i love by one of the worst people on the planet. but maybe that’s what makes those moments so sharply funny.

i'd be interested to pick the brain of an attorney familiar with application of federal hate crime enhancements to different kinds of charges - i'm curious about moon's reasoning here.
the victims he's referring to were of the overt acts (in this case, multiple assaults) included in the statement of the offense, but the actual charges plead to were conspiracy to riot. so much of the argument, though, was about the overt acts rather than the conspiracy.
but if the actual motivation for the actual crime they were convicted of was to target people they believe to be a part of a massive jewish conspiracy, what difference does it make who the victims of the overt acts were?

we’re on a lunch break during the sentencing for three members of the white supremacist group RAM who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to riot here in charlottesville in august 2017.
the arguments over the hate crime enhancement are dragging out what would’ve been a quick hearing.
it’s troubling to me that judge moon seems to not comprehend the depth and intensity of antisemitism inherent in this group’s motivation.
while there’s no proof the victims themselves were jewish, it’s clear the assailants believed them to be part of a jewish conspiracy.

One thing I really hate doing is changing my mind on stuff. Mostly because of the way it alienates those who I’ve created friendships with in the midst of deep conviction.

If you couldn’t tell from the recent #FaithfullyLGBT post, I am now fully affirming.
My partner and I started a Side B celibate partnership 18 months ago. Both of us have been convicted that God does affirm covenanted same-sex relationships, even when they express themselves in sexual union.
I plan on writing more about this in the next week on my blog, but it is something we have discerned with a lot of prayer, study, and discernment with fellow Christians.

(3) & instigate citizen vigilantism.

In addition to circulating bogus information to incite violence, the "target's" personal information, medical history, and communications are also disseminated to augment the citizen vigilantes' ability to harass and provoke the "#target"

A few quick things I've learned recently from interviewing people about social media, which has been super interesting.
(1) Twitter is basically just viewed as a place to read things and keep up with the news. "It’s almost kind of weird to follow friends on Twitter - in my experience. It’s not a social network for people who know each other"
(2) Facebook is a place where your family and people over thirty talk to each other. Older people express concern about privacy and stuff but can't be bothered to move.

One thing I really want to talk about, and improve, is that we get the most hits by far on articles where we call out racism, especially in the media. It’s important that we stand up to racism, but other important stories get much less traction... and that worries me.
I think stories calling out the more overt racism become easy rallying points for outrage that is rarely sustained towards systemic change, and they allow ppl to create a category of ppl who are the ‘real racists’ and distance themselves from the realities of societal racism...
They’re also much easier to engage with - here is something racist someone said, and this is why it’s racist. Done. Whereas - here is a complex story of decades of malfeasance but without a single villain to point at, and with no clear cut solutions to it - not so much.
